Meit Fohlin, Gotland Region

Meit Fohlin, Mayor (Kommunstyrelsens ordförande) of Gotland and one of the speakers at Baltic Sea Future. This island in the Baltic Sea, is aiming for a climate-neutral energy supply by 2025.

The local level is crucial for a healthy Baltic Sea. Meit Fohlin is mayor (kommunstyrelsens ordförande) of the Gotland Region. In the early 1990s, the municipality started the work to turn the island into a sustainable society by 2025. Sustainability  – energy, resources, agriculture, waste, radiation, etc. In particular, Gotland wants to be greenhouse gas emission neutral within one generation.

The Gotland Region reports that the municipality has cut CO2 emissions from fossil fuels in its own operations by over 50 per cent since 1995. On the island as a whole, fuel production and local energy supply from renewable resources are both increasing. Local wind power meets about 50 per cent of the island’s annual electricity demand.
